Andrew Davidson

Hello, I’m Andrew

At heart, I am an adviser. People bring me complicated ideas, difficult decisions, half-built projects, policy problems and occasionally a complete mess. I help them work out what matters, what is possible and what to do next.

My background brings together behavioural science, privacy, ethics, research and AI in its many strange and wonderful forms. That combination is useful when an organisation wants to use new technology without losing sight of the people, rules and real-world systems around it.

Through R&D Nordic, I work with universities, public bodies, businesses, cultural organisations and innovation partners. The setting changes, but the work normally involves some mixture of:

  • making AI useful, understandable and responsible
  • turning privacy and governance requirements into workable practice
  • designing research and innovation projects
  • finding funding and developing applications
  • building partnerships and project teams
  • running workshops, retreats and practical learning sessions
  • helping people think more clearly about behaviour, organisations and change

Sometimes this means a focused one-to-one session. Sometimes it means spending a day with a team, pulling an idea apart and putting it back together. Sometimes we build a full project, find the right partners and apply for funding. The aim is not to produce another impressive-looking strategy that nobody uses. It is to leave with something clearer, stronger and more likely to work.

For people who like numbers, I have supported more than 250 research and innovation applications across programmes including Horizon Europe, the Research Council of Norway, Erasmus+, NordForsk and Interreg. Together, those applications have requested approximately NOK 500 million in funding.

I have also contributed to more than 300 privacy, governance and compliance activities, including DPIAs, data-processing agreements, records of processing, GDPR assessments, research approvals, audits and contract-related privacy work.

Alongside R&D Nordic, I work as an R&D and privacy adviser in Norwegian higher education. The roles are separate, but both keep me close to the practical realities of research, funding, governance and organisational change. I am also a member of the Digi Innlandet AI Expert Group, contributing to discussions about responsible AI and regional capability building.

I work best with people who are curious, open to honest advice and willing to make things rather than simply talk about making them. We can take the work seriously without making every meeting feel painfully serious.
